Shifting Ground is a partnership project between the Arts Office of Clare County Council and Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) with the support of the Arts Council of Ireland and associated partners.

Established in 2006, the long-term aim of the project is to promote cross-disciplinary dialogue concerning art and culture in rural contexts with a view to creating a discursive space where artists, cultural practitioners and grassroots participants in the rural dynamic can work together to define the ethics and aesthetics of contemporary art practice against the background of social and ecological change.

Shifting Ground arose from Clare Arts Office’s commitment to commissioning contemporary artists to create pertinent and challenging work in rural areas of County Clare under the guise of the Ground Up commissioning series.

This commissioning series was concurrent to GMIT’s development of a rural arts module, hence the emergence of Shifting Ground.
